I don't normally do this, but I feel I have to.

The new PT disc may dissapoint you, so I'm just letting you all know check it out before you buy it, because it's certainly not up to past standards.

I think it's quite good. It will take a few more listens before I'm ready to say where it stands in respect to "Im Absentia", which I really enjoyed.

One of these guys was associated with Opeth at some point isn't that right? Any similarities? Is this band even metal?

Steve Wilson is Porcupine Tree. He's the singer, the guitar player, and he writes all the music and the lyrics. He also produced Opeth's last three CDs. He will not be producing Opeth's next CD.

PT sounds nothing like Opeth. They are a Prog Rock band. Probably one of the best around. They share with Opeth some Pink Floyd roots, but that's about it.

I finally gave it a few listens. After close review, I'm ordering everything else in their catologue! If this is their weakest album, I'd like to see them on a good day. "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" is an instant classic; 10 minutes, but no dull moments (you can just ff to 1:45 to get past the ambient intro.)

Very good stuff all in all, I'm glad I happened across this thread.

their last two albums, "deadwing" & "in absentia", are more metallic/hard rock than their previous albums which vary from the pink floydian space rock in "the sky moves sideways" to the pop rock in "stupid dream." i would say listen before you buy.

I've got the entire PT discography, and I happen to think that Deadwing is one of Steve Wilson's best. Not too many tunes grab me on the first listen, but "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" and "Deadwing" were instant classics the first time I heard them. Granted, it may not be true "metal" (whatever that means these days), but it rocks. Top-notch production & engineering.
