I used to do the hardradio thing a little and also did some downloads, but it seems impossible to find the stuff I'm actually looking for nowadays. It would be great if I had enough money to just throw at random cds, but I don't and I've been disappointed a lot lately, so I was hoping someone knew a good alternative.
Are those pay per mp3 sites any good or help? I find that idea to be somewhat upsetting since I listen to cds far more often than mp3s, but if that's the only way to check stuff out without using the radio then that's what I might have to do. |

I check out preview MP3 samples and listen to monkey-c.com.
Otherwise, I get tips from other people, or just pick up new material from artists I already like. |

What used to work pretty well for me, and still does for the most part:
Check out some of the suggestions that people make on this board (and various others)...download a few songs. If I like it, buy it.
Used to visit CD Now and check out the "If you like this band you might like this one, too" suggestions (found a couple great bands that way). 'Course that was before CD Now sold out to Amazon.
If you want to buy music online, I would personally recommend that you AVOID any of the "legal" sites. All you will get there is low quality, DRM infected crap. Until the RIAA or whoever can offer a fair system of high-quality unrestricted encodings, they will never see a dime from me.
If you want to buy (and you should buy if you like it), you might as well get the CD. At least you get fair quality for you money.

I actually do one of the sites that GZ says to stay away from. Its called Media Club and they allow 1 minute samples of everything so I can . So far they work for me with the best part being they dont charge per song but per MB...so $10 gets me about 660 MB and about 10-12 cds worth of music |

For known bands I come here and see what you guys are raving about.
But for about 6 months now I've been almost exclusively focused on bands that at total unknowns. I hit a number of "Unsigned Bands" forums and have been pleasently surprised by a number of bands and gotten some truly good MP3s free and legit! |

don't forget about our own unsigned band section of the hardboard,
chock full of musicians eagerly awaiting your words of praise or your simonesque critique,, |
