What is Power Metal anyway? The subject header read "Influential Power/Prog/Melodic Metal", so I'm wondering if Power Metal is both Progressive & Melodic? I suppose it's all in the eye of the beholder, but if that's the case then my picks are probably more mainstream than the posts so far:
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
The Gathering - How To Measure A Planet?
Metallica - And Justice For All
Annihilator - Never Neverland
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Pushmonkey - S/T |

I'll add to the progressive/melodic list Mack started (and disagree with a few)
The Gathering - Mandylion
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Dream Theater - Images and Words (how many clones did this one spawn!)
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Iron Maiden - just about anything they did in the first few releases is influential so take your pick
The other posts have excellent choices for the "power metal" label |

I actually think Soloud's list is better than my own. It was late, and my brain wasn't firing on all cylinders (Pushmonkey? Annihilator?). You hit it on the head with Mindcrime and Images & Words. I guess they were so obvious that I didn't even consider them. As for the Gathering, I'm sticking to How To Measure A Planet. While Mandylion was a major breakthrough, I think they really hit their stride with Planet. As for Metallica, I guess I could go with Master of Puppets, but Justice seemed more progressive in nature. |
