1984: W.A.S.P. debut self titled album
When this hit the streets, I bought it as soon as I could find it. I don't think it left my turntable (yes, we had turntables back in the Stone Age...) for almost a month. "The Flame" just might be Blackie's finest vocal work ever. There is not one bad song on the entire album. I remember the debut of NBC's Friday Night Videos TV show. That was the world release of "Lick It Up", the first KISS video without make-up. Leading up to that, they played the video for "I Wanna Be Somebody" from this album. I guess they wanted "something metal"...little did they know what they were in for! This album set the tone for their entire career. Unrepentant, no holds barred, in your face hard rock with all the visual gimmicks and sonic wallop you could ever want. It had it all...the anthem, the ode to rebellion and angst ("School Daze"), the staged evil ("The Hellion"), the power ballad ("Sleeping In The Fire"), and the outrageous ("The Torture Never Stops"). Sounds every bit as good today as it did in 1984 too. |
