Better than the last one, but I still need more listens. If I'm not listening to prog, and I need more listens, it usually means it isn't great. A few riffs pulled me in for sure, so it is certainly worth checking out. Bottom line on Nevermore IMO is...what happened to Dreaming Neon Black? That was not a heavy song by any stretch, but it was Dane's best. The best songs on the new album seem to be the ones with clear melodies, but they are still balls out on trying to set the land speed record on tempo.
Melody > heavy factor for me, but then again, I'm wierd |

Saw them in Cleveland a couple weeks ago. Awesome show and the title track was killer.
The CD has four to five really good songs. |

I like it. I really didn't like the first two Nevermore albums that much but everything from Dreaming Neon Black on I like quite a bit. It's strange because I find the Nevermore discs that get great reviews (Dreaming Neon Black, This Godless Endeavor) are a bit over-rated and the ones that get mediocre reviews (Enemies of Reality, The Obsidian Conspiracy) to be slightly under-rated. I definitely think there is an element within the metal community that just doesn't accept the fact that a really heavy band like Nevermore can occasionally do the verse/chorus/verse/chorus thing with big hooks and do it very well, and unfortunately that element will dismiss albums like The Obsidian Conspiracy because of tracks like Emptiness Unobstructed and Without Morals...two tracks that I find to be really strong songs.
I've been looking at getting Warrel Dane's solo album for quite awhile and just have never gotten around to it. Any opinions on that one? |
