THE TRUTH ABOUT THE HARDBOARD

The question I propose this evening is whether Hardradio.com should institute some type of content policy over the bulletin board service at their website. The United States First Amendment does not dictate what content can be discussed on the internet so I trust this argument will not be brought up in this discussion. It seems that the “Artist Discussion” board has become a free-for-all. What tolerance should the Bulletin Board Administrators accept as appropriate discussion ? How should the board guidelines, if any, be enforced ? Current practice of other internet bulletin boards runs the entire spectrum of moderation. Certainly resource issues will effect the level of moderation which can be reasonably performed at any particular website.

Allow me to “test” the board with the following links. For the most part I think these cover the spectrum of issues that have been discussed in recent months. Based on current practice I would expect each of these links to remain intact and I would politely ask the Board Administers to explain any moderation activity.

White Power Links - http://www.rahowa.com/links.htm[/ url]

Nation of Islam Homepage - http://www.noi.org/

Ratt Fanpage - http://www.ratt-n-roll.com/

The First Satanic Church - http://www.satanicchurch.com/

The Christian Broadcast Network - http://www.cbn.org/

Modern Street Slang Reference - http://lugnutz.com/slang.htm

Slayer Fanpage – http://slayerized.com/

I have come to the realization that perhaps my expectation of this Bulletin Board is not accurate. I suppose it is up to each of us to decide how much tolerance we have for the content posted by other members. I am not calling for any measures to be taken, I am merely trying to understand the viewpoint of my fellow Hardboardians in regard to the issue of acceptable content at this website.

Rock on,

Lockfist

Im really offended by that ratt fan page link.

It seems like most places only care if you link porn or illegal mp3's. All of those other sites basically are there because they have the right to be. If you dont like whats on there dont click the link. It would be different if a skinhead came on here and started posting messages to visit his site about hate to other races but that doesn't happen, most everyone has their own opinions, and just about everyone on this particular board is good about sharing they're views without forcing them down your throat (1 exception). Some racist comments made here, but what are you going to do, aholes in every bunch. I think the topics should not stray far from music, but some general discussion is good to see what view people are coming from.

Did you expect anything less?

The only way to deal with rude, offensive, boorish posters (short of banning them outright, which I don't think sets a good precedent) is simply to ignore them. It's worked pretty well in at least one case I can think of.

The real offenders around here are nothing more than attention whores, in my opinion. I don't think they really hold such extreme views, it's just that they're looking to get noticed (maybe I'm being overly optimistic). Deprive them of that which they crave, and they'll get the message. And maybe then they'll begin acting like mature (ok, maybe not mature), responsible members of our community.

The one thing I've always hated about internet chat and message boards is that anonymity emboldens people. People will say some of the cruelest, stupidest things online that they would probably never think of saying face to face to someone....just because no one can see their face. I'm happy that MOST people around here aren't like that, and it's the reason I keep coming back.

Granted, I haven't been posting for a long time, but I have actually been pretty impressed by the intelligence with which topics have been discussed here. I also belong to a couple of other newsgroup/messageboards and they seem to have a lot more problems in the way of "trolls" or negative postings. Iron Chef is correct when he says that the best policy is to ignore those individuals who seek attention by posting inflammatory remarks. Otherwise, the only other options are to get drawn into a discussion with the troll- which is exactly what he wants, or to have content screened, which hurts everyone in the end.

GODOF80s has insulted pretty much every person on the board except the three fake nicknames he uses. I'd say it's about time you start ignoring him. We complain about him, yet every one of his posts gets 70+ responses.

Amen

Only problem is, he keeps getting into legit threads, I guess we'll have to ignore him there too.

That's true. But no matter how much he riles you, just resolve not to respond.
