Hey gang, I was driving endlessly Sunday night and couldn't catch the VH1 Thin Lizzy Behind the Music. Was it everything that we were all hoping for ? Does anyone know when it replays soon ?
Just staring at my Phil Lynott poster and pouting....... |

It was weird seeing in in-depth discussion of Thin Lizzy on television. Wow, you mean they weren't a one-hit wonder?
It's really impossible, from a true fan's persepective, to do the band justice in one hour. Given that, I think VH-1 did a solid job. It was cool to see the old live footage and interviews with Phil. They also had current interviews with Bell, Downey, Gorham, Moore, Philomena, O'Donnel (manager) and Fitzpatrick (the guy who did many of the covers). I understand that Phil's death is probably the most "sensationalistic" part of the band's story, but a bit too much time was spent focusing on his downward spiral and demise into heroin rather than on his musical genious. It is still incredible to me that VH-1 even gave the band the time of day, so I'm not complaining.
The photos of the bloated Phil in his last days were disturbing. He was such a wreck that it is surprising no one got him into rehab sooner.
Rest in peace, Phil.
p.s. I'm sure they will re-run it quite a bit, so you should not have trouble finding it. VH-1's web site may have a schedule.

Guess I should've expected that. Glad to hear you found it solid. As much as I enjoy the Behind the Music specials and rarely miss one, they do all seem to follow a blueprint in following a band or artist's career.
1 - The lean early years and the related pitfalls
2 - Success and meteoric rise
3 - Giving in to the temptations that accompany success; drugs/alcohol/sex/overspending
4 - Fall from grace
5 - Rehab & reunion and new material that sucks (usually)
Sensationalism doesn't seem to leave a stone unturned in this business does it?

I only caught a few minutes but agree that it was pretty good except for the amount of time spent on Phil's death. Barely heard any music, cept for renegade in the background.. at least at the end... |
