Didn't you folks get the newsflash? Heavy metal just swallowed grunge whole. Seriously, people, Alice in Chains resents the grunge tag even more than it does the metal one. NO grunge band ever took the time to call itself grunge--it was a work coined by a music industry eager to maintain the metal sound while disposing of the name. As Cantrell (I believe put) put it, "we went to bed a metal band and woke up a grunge band." Grunnge is metal, Tool is metal, Pearl Jam is metal...most of it, anyhow. Since nobody bothered reading my plea for PJ, I guess I'll have to list a few more songs: "Corduroy," "Spin the Black Circle," "State of Love and Trust." Where (some of) you people get the idea from that this band can't rock is beyond me.

MetallicHead, welcome to the board. Ask anything you want. Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid Limp fans.

Nobody really said they can't rock, just said they're not heavy. I think you just like a good argument! (not that there's anything wrong with that) Like Death said - "one man's heavy metal is another's Pearl Jam."

I recently read a article with Zakk Wylde in it and share his thoughts on Peral Jam quote Zakk talking about Black Lable Society(say Eddie Veder bought a six pack of beer and it took all the money he had to do so,and when he came out of the store some guy in a truck stole eddies beer. Now Eddie would go home without the beer crying and write a song about crying cause someond stole his beer. Now Zakk and his band would get the guy in the trucks plate number find out where he lived and smash the windows in the guys truck, beat the hell out of the guy burn his house down while drinking the beer then write a song about the only regrets he had was that he didn't slash the guys tires also.)Now that is heavy metal vs. grunge for any doubters.

I don't get a chance to get on much anymore but it's nice to see that Matt hasn't changed! I think I'll just nod, smile and listen for my name!

I've been listening to metal for about 16 years now and I guess I'm having a hard time conforming with the times. I can remember when there was such things as posers, hard rock (which at one time Ozzy was refered to)
glam rock and straight heavy metal. Bands like Pearl Jam fell into the poser realm they were not and still arent heavy. Like I said I guess I cant seem to come around to todays thinking. We need to keep the true Heavy Metal alive, I think its the media who starts to label bands as heavy metal just because they have long hair or one guitar in the band. I thank the creators of hard radio to help this effort not to mention sites like CDNow where you can get the stuff that none of the record stores carry anymore. Thanx for letting someone who hates to see the way music is and has been going air his thoughts.

I understand what Matt's saying. I still dont think Pearl Jam are metal. To me, they are just a "rock" band (which, by the way, seems to be an even more negative tag then "metal" these days). Allan Parsons Project have some pretty heavy tunes, too. To my grandmother, Bruce Springsteen is probably metal. Which is to say, as I did in my prior post, I have no idea what metal is. But like one former Supreme Court Justice said regarding his inability to precisely define obscenity: I know it when I see it.

Brian, Pearl Jam are poseurs? Let's see: they stopped making videos at the height of their popularity, turned their backs on Spin and Rolling Stone, fought Ticketmaster because of excessive charges to their fans, and released an album every year to the chagrin of their record label? What, may I ask, were they posing as?? If so, I wish more bands would have followed that trend.
