I was wondering what bands you guys think have a truly identifying trademark sound. I'm not talking about vocals, strictly instrumets. For example, if someone heard the first 5 seconds of an Iron Maiden song they would know right away from the guitar and bass that it was Maiden and no one else.
Here are some of mine:
Iron Maiden: Definitive Bass, Guitar
Early Kiss: Ace's guitar work is pretty unmistakable, not very complex but unmistakable
Van Halen: Nope, I'm not thinking guitar . . . but Alex's drums. There's no mistaking a VH song when you here Alex start pounding away.
Ozzy Osbourne: Randy Rhodes and Zakk Wylde. Both had original sounds and styles that said "I'm Ozzy's guitarist"
Mr. Big: Bill Sheehan's Bass.
Boston: Yeah, I know they're not metal but Tom Scholz guitar sound is to me one of the most recognizable in rock. |

Megadeth has that sound to me. Instantly identifiable. I would also say Rush is another band with a trademark sound that is unique and in this category. |

Agreed on AVH's drums. Maybe not the best drummer in town, but probably the most sonically distinctive.
For overall band sound, it's Queen all the way. Same with Brian May's guitars (Marty Friedman lagging a distant second).
For bass, I'd agree that Billy Sheehan has the most distinct sound, though I'd rather not tune in for it. |

I agree with everyone mentioned so far. I would also add:
Slayer: there is only one
Anthrax: Scott Ian attacks a guitar like nobody else |

Metallica definitely has a distinct guitar crunch. So did Guns N Roses with Slash. |

I totally agree with Iron Maiden. very distinctive. And I'd like to add AC/DC. |

Led Zeppelin and Hendrix. John Bonham's drumming and Plant's vocals can't be mistaken for anything else. The same goes for Jimi's playing.
It's funny, just the other day a person at work mentioned that "all metal bands sound the same to me and it sounds like they are all playing the same old song". I had an argument of the day with the bugger! |

Yngwie Malmsteen, you can tell his songs within the first 5 seconds usually. Also Pantera has a very distinct sound between Vinnie's drum sound and Dimebag's solid state trademark sound. Sabbath is always unmistakeble as well.
