The only way we would use nukes is if terrorists went to using their own weapons of mass destruction. For the record, using nukes is the official, and only, U.S. response to a chemical strike. But this wasn't one of those.
But, BTW, the A-bomb was NOT the most destructive bombing of WWII. The bombing of Dresden was. Granted, it took more than one bomb, but it was all done in under an hour (the first bombing, that is). It created a firestorm. Killed more people and destroyed a greater area than either a-bomb. Created hurricane force winds. There was one survivor who told of the attempts of some Hitler Youth to help people out of the city. There was a bridge or something (I forget exactly), and they had tied a rope to one end and were walking down the bridge, clinging to the rope. The winds were so powerful a couple were actually ripped from the rope and carried into the inferno. Bricks shattered from the heat, people jumped in the river and policemen walked along the banks shooting people to put them out of their misery because the heat was so intense.
My point is, we don't have to use nukes to do immense destruction. Granted, modern nukes are way more powerful than the ones used in WWII, but we don't really need that kind of explosive power anyway. We need precision right now. Which is what we are best equipped for, but we still have a fleet of massive bombers capable of carpet-bombing areas if the need arises (the B-52s are still going strong, and the B-1s can actually hold even more ordnance than them) |

the power output of the plane that hit the WTC equals a small tactical nuke. a nuke that can fit in a back pack there were reports that russian made backpack nukes were missing.who has them if true? are we willing to wait if a terrorist has enough will to use them against us? or are we going to deter further aggression by anyone? we need to decide NOW not LATER when there may not be one... |

Have to disagree with you there Spirit, they might have the technology but can they actually drop one here without being shot down or sunk before getting in range. The USA has the definite advantage in the air/sea, ground may be a different story.
I think the enemy is far too scattered in this case, if and that's a big if they can trace terrorist support back to a specific govt(s) then maybe they will use the 'heavy' stuff. Let's face the truth bombing the crap out of Afghanistan will accomplish nothing, most people there lead a miserable existence and are probably more interested in getting a decent meal than fighting the USA, the avg lifespan is around 47yrs old. Does anyone actually believe that Bin is still there? If somebody was coming after me I wouldn't stay at home that's for sure. |

Yes, the threat of nukes from other countries is almost entirely limited to terrorist attacks. The only two countries that can actually reach the U.S. with nukes by conventional means are China and certain former Soviet Republics. China has a few, a very few, ICBMs. That's all they have that could reach us. The Russians have a helluva lot of ICBMs, plus they have bombers that could theoretically reach us, although we'd really have to have our head up our ass not to shoot them down first (which isn't out of the question).
But neither of those two countries are against us on this issue. No one else has ICBMs. France and Britain have IRBMs, which have much shorter ranges. And neither them nor any other country besides Russia have bombers that can physically reach the U.S.
This thread was leading up to a point, but it's late (or early, depending on your point of view), and I've already forgotten what that was. |

Sounds like you were leading up to saying that there's no way terrorists could reach the US with nuclear weapons...but that contradicts your first sentence, so now I'm just confused. :P |

I meant by conventional means. In other words, they would have to smuggle one in. Spirit was giving the impression she was worried of them dropping bombs or launching missiles at us. Just not a possibility for any of the countries that are on our sh.it list over this incident. |
