Guys! How can Motorhead not be here? Lemmy's a genius at this stuff... "Orgasmatron" (best anti-religion, war, and politics song ever). His sex stuff is hilarious (Love Me Like A Reptile). What's great about Lemmy is he can be funny or serious (1916) and even wrote some decent lyrics for Ozzy.
Some other contenders - Operation Mindcrime (a concept album that actually has a good story), Metallica's Disposable Heroes, Black Sabbath's War Pigs, Thin Lizzy's Suicide....

There are great lyric writers in metal for days, and each person finds the group/artist who speaks to them in a very personal way. The lyrics from the 2112 album from Rush really gets the spine tingling for me, and I can't believe somebody got in my brain and wrote "Blind Suffering", like Brainstorm did.

Oh, I definitely have nothing against fantasy adventure-type lyrics. For that matter, I think there's a hell of a lot more potential in those than, say, political lyrics or lyrics about love, life, and people problems (is there a "falling asleep" smiley?).

But a lot of bands out there have given them a bad rep - even Rhapsody, a band I definitely dig in a big way, has always had a fairly serious lyric-writing problem.

But Bal-Sagoth does it best - Byron's lyrics are the most awesomely pompous stuff to be found in the genre, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Slayer: Live Undead, Read Between The Lies
Death: Sacred Serinity, Pull The Plug
Metallica: Dyer's Eve, Escape (cheesy I know, but this song really moved me when I was a teen)

Deicide: Repent To Die and Deicide
ST: How Will I Laugh.....
Death Angel: Room With A View
Iced Earth: Dracula, I Died For You, Damien
Enigma: Sadness
Sevendust: Live Again
Anthrax: In My World

Nothing really makes my hair stand up like anything from King and Mercyful Fate, cool stuff here..

Probably a crappy list, but it tends to be certain songs rather than the band itself. I'm not sure why but really Satanic (and ballads)songs give me the willie's and I don't even believe in that $hit. The more eveil the better.
