I'm sure as metalheads,we've all gotten slagged at one time by outsiders for our love of this crazy genre."How can you listen to that stuff?" is one question I've heard on more than one occasion. My question is what metal album would you tie a non-fan to a chair to listen to in order to win them over?I think the new Blind Guardian opus might win the respect of a classical or opera buff. What do you think?

This is my first posting in a few years, it's good to be back. I believe I would ease them into it, play something old. I haven't forced anyone into it by bondage... well it was at least consentual. I played someone Dream Theater "Awake", and it turned them into a fan of Dream Theater, but not all metal as I would have hoped. I push Queensryche as often as possible, anything from them.

It would depend on where they're coming from, musically. I never really tried getting my friend Christine into metal, but she's been to a couple shows with me (Strapping Young Lad, Into Eternity) and seeing as she's really into that East Coast (Canada) Celtic rock thing, she's enjoyed a lot of the folky stuff in my collection. I don't think I would ever foist a whole album on her, though. Poor girl.

Sounds like she might like Thin Lizzy.

I think the new BLIND GUARDIAN would actually overwhelm a non Metal fan... Hehehee...

I would probably start someone off with some later SKYCLAD or perhaps NIGHTWISH, THE GATHERING.... "light" stuff and then as they get sucked in by this awesome music bring on more extreme bands.

I gave up trying to do that a long time ago. In my experience, metal is one of those things you either "get" or you don't. If someone liked 70s hard rock to begin with, I might have a chance. Otherwise, forget it.

Some girl I'm friends with is a huge Janis Joplin, Doors, and Nirvana fan. I played her some Black Sabbath. She wasn't expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. She did not like Sabotage, but she loved Master Of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and has gone as far as to consider Sabbath in her top 5 bands. I've taped her some Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, and Diamond Head, but she hasn't gotten a chance to listen to it yet. I wonder how much she'll like it.

I've turned non-metal friends onto MOTORHEAD (They like the groove and "boogie" factor), and even Sabbath (the guy was a pothead, so I played SWEET LEAF - that was the trick).

Usually, I go for something melodic and classy - like Thin Lizzy.
