As the dj's for the heavy metal programs on CFBX 92.5 The X
at the University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops, BC, we
see a large number of metal releases, some good and some
not so good. Our theory has always been that a cd that we
cannot recommend to listeners in anyway is one that shouldn't
receive airplay from our shows. Regardless if it is on the station's
playlist or not. This is not done as an act of defiance against the
station or it's management, nor is it an indication that we are
displeased with the label that serviced the disc to the station.
It is a direct comment on our opinion of the music offered by
the artist. It is for this reason that the shows; MASS
HYPNOSIS (Saturday nights at 10pm pst) and OVERNYTE
(Saturday nights at 12am pst) will not be playing any tracks
from 'St. Anger' by Metallica.
We feel that the band was misleading in press statements leading
up to the release of 'St. Anger' by implying the music was a return to their
musical past. In addition, the music presented is not just
sub-par by our judgement, but sub-par by the standards previously
established by the band. We feel 'St. Anger' is a contrived and
blatant attempt at cashing in on current hard rock trends. It is not
what the album was advertised as, and for these reasons, we
are boycotting it.
We urge other college and community stations across North
America and around the world to join us in expressing our anger
with a band that has once again shown what they
think of their old fans. The album is a disgracefully
produced, thinly disguised cash-grab by a band that
is so desperate to retain whatever shred of credibility they have left
that they would produce an album of nu-metal songs that most
bands would probably pass on. Perhaps the greatest indication
of this album’s quality would be to look at reviews. There are a number of good reviews for ‘St. Anger’. They all praise the album, throwing adjectives at us like ‘grinding’, ‘breakneck’, ‘raw’… the list goes on and on. The common denominator of all these good reviews? They all come from sourcesthat no self-respecting metal fan would go to for an opinion on anything, let alone a recommendation on what is-love it or hate it- the most important album release in the first half of 2003. Rolling Stone and Spin can gush about it all they want, but real metal fans know where to get their reviews. With few exceptions, the metal community is turning its back on a band we feel turned its back on us long ago.
Mainstream radio has welcomed the first single from ‘St. Anger’
in spite of the insistence of the reviews from rock and pop critics that
the album is not ‘radio friendly’. A quick comparison of rock radio trends and a real honest look at ‘St. Anger’ show a band who has made an album that is not exploring their roots, but simply following the trends of bands that didn’t even exist when they had already achieved stardom. We know that other dj’s at CFBX may play the album upon it’s addition to the playlist.
We don’t have a problem with that. But as former Metallica fans, who have witnessed a band put out pap for the last 12 years, we refuse to give airplay to a band that inspired so many to embrace this form of music and be proud to do so. And that now mocks it with albums like ‘St. Anger’.

I think you should boycott Soilwork's new album too. That one's even worse.
