Same old story with a few exceptions, a lot of great players underrated and a huge lot of crap overrated.

Those list bore me more than politics, and that's a lot to say!

Are these in order? Assuming they are here are my opinions:

1. tony iommi - Finally this guy gets the attention he deserves. He isn't the best guitarist ever though, even if he wrote some of the best/most original riffs.
2. kirk hammet and james hetfield- um no. Kirk Hammett is overrated. James Hetfield is a good riff writer though.
3. angus and Malcolm young - another overrate couple of guys.
4. randy rhoads - He was good, but not this good
5. eddie van halen - He's definitely a very influencial player, and has lots of talent, I'm not a huge fan of his though.
6. jimmy page - don't like him
7. dimebag darrel - he has some talent, but his band sucks. He isn't a beast either, so I wouldn't even put him in my top 5O.
8. zakk wylde - most overrated Ozzy guitarist. It's funny when he talks though, cause he's such an egomaniac.
9. adam jones - who is he?
10. kerry king and jeff hanneman - some of the best thrash riffs around. Lacking in the lead department.
11. dave murray and Adrian smith - fit perfectly with the music, but don't do anything to wow me.
12. jimi Hendrix - never a big fan
13. glen tipton and k.k. downing - some of my favorite solos are from these guys[mostly Glenn]. They aren't technically gifted enough to be this high in the list, but I like them so who cares?
14. ace frehley and paul Stanley - these guys can't play their instruments worth shit, but they do write good songs.
15. slash - very overrated
16. Ritchie blackmore - master songwriter. He can play some good melodies. He's influencial enough to deserve high honors.
17. yngwie malmsteen - You could put him anywhere from 1-5 and I wouldn't question your judgement. There may be players I like more, but no one is as technically proficient as this dude.
18. joe perry and brad whitford - overrated
19. dave mustaine and marty friedman - love em. Marty's solo on Tornado of Souls is my alltime favorite solo
20. chuck schuldiner - this guy is definitely a beast
21. brian may - he's ok
22. Michael schenker - He's another one who belongs in the top 5. Definitely a beast.
23. Nigel tufnel - who is he?
24. jeff beck - not overly familiar with his music
25. tom morello - overrated but not terrible
26. head and munky - overrated, but in this case they are terrible.
27. john petrucci - He wanks a little too much without having the ability to come up with something I want to listen to. Yngwie could wank all day and still be interesting- same for Satch, Vai, and Schenker. I'm not sure how good Ulrich Roth's wanking skills are, so I won't put him down.
28. kim thayil - not particularly good
29. Vivian Campbell - overrated
30. daron malakian - who is he?
31. scott ian - not that great
32. tom g. warrior - ok
33. chris degarmo and Michael wilton - they're more about writing good songs than being good players, but they can still play their instruments.
34. c.c. deville - someone was smoking crack when they put him down here.
35. marten hagstrom and Fredrik thorndendal - who?
36. alex lifeson - yeah whatever
37. paul gilbert - haven't heard
38. jerry Cantrell - ok
39. mantas - This is like saying Fast Eddie was the best player. It's fun to hear this guy play, but not because he's technically gifted.
40. Jason becker - Word has it that he's a badass. I haven't heard him though.
41. phil collen and steve Clarke - you mother****ers! It's Pete Willis and Steve Clark not this Phil Collin lamo.
42. mikael akerfeldt and peter lindgren - yeah ok. They do some different things than most metal guys
43. fast eddie Clarke - already discussed him
44. nuno Bettencourt - great soloist.
45. warren demartini - not impressed
46. mick mars - see Fast Eddie and Mantas but then take away the comments about them writing good songs, cause first of all Nikki Sixx writes all the songs, and second of all most of the songs suck, except for the Shout at the Devil album.
47. george lynch - yeah he can shred
48. ted nugent - him too
49. jake e. lee - decent guy
50. Rudolf schenker and uli john roth - Ulrich Roth is top five on his own for his solo release Earthquake. Rudolf Schenker is top five best rhythm guitarists.
51. oystein “euronymous” aarseth - haven't heard him
52. scott Gorham and brian Robertson - could be the best duo ever.
53. steve vai - this guy makes some of the coolest noises with his guitar. He pushes the boundaries of what is rock guitar without abandoning the fundamentals that make rock 'n' roll guitar great. He's also very technical. Should be the top 1O at least for technical.
54. reb beach - heard little of him
55. trey azagthoth - haven't heard him
56. john sykes - he's a beast, but he also likes Eminem. Can you forgive him for that?
57. hank shermann and Michael denner - nice riffs
58. Ritchie sambora - ok, guess so
59. jon donais and matt backhand - who?
60. Stephen carpenter - who?
61. alex skolnick and eric Peterson - Eric Peterson is only ok, but Alex Skolnick is the best thrash lead guitarist.
62. brian tatier - good to see this guy make this list. He's a beast. Can do good rhythm and good leads
63. john Christ - he blows goats
64. scott “wino” weinrich - haven't heard him
65. pepper keenan and woddy weathersman - haven't heard him
66. tommy victor - who?
67. leslie west - who?
68. Vernon reid - haven't heard him
69. glen buxton and Michael bruce - they write good songs, but they aren't good players
70. bjorn gelotte and jesper stromblad - they used to write great songs back when it was Glenn Ljungstrom and Jesper. Their sense of melody is unparalleled in the melodic death scene.
71. jim matheos - he's not that good
72. gary holt and rick hunolt - They are better than average thrash guitarists
73. Donald buck dharma roeser - more good song writers, this time with some pretty decent guitar skills
74. Michael amott - he writes good riffs, but where's his brother? Chris is the one who plays all the incredible leads.
75. Robert fripp - haven't heard him
76. andre olbrich - Blind Guardian has a well rounded guitar sound. This guy is pretty good. Where's Marcus Siepen?
77. joe Satriani - He's really smooth. Not quite as interesting as Vai, but his technical skills are probably slightly better.
78. frank hannon and tommy skeoch - don't really have an opinion on tesla
79. ty tabor - didn't impress me
80. mark morton and will adler - who?
81. dino cazares - who?
82. pete townshend - this guy is more about attitude than about playing good guitar.
83. john schaffer - he's better than average
84. timo tolkii - barely heard him. He is a a goofy guy. Loves that recent interview with him.
85. neil young - I somehow get the feeling that this guy wouldn't be able to compete with many of these others.
86. abbath doom occulta - who?
87. kai Hansen - He was good. Wrote good songs in Helloween[don't know what happened with Gamma Ray, cause I don't like them nearly as much]. Why isn't Weikath here? Mike's the better guitarist.
88. uffe cederlund and alex hellid -who?
89. leigh stephens - who?
90. jim martin - Faith No More? ok stuff
91. Michael romeo - He isn't the neoclassical shredder that people claim he is. But he has some well formulated solos like that on A Fools Paradise. His riffs are fairly complex with irregular timing as well. Too bad his guitar tone sounds like shit.
92. bill steer - carcass? Haven't heard this guy.
93. piggy - who?
94. tony bourge who?
95. sammy hagar - He can make it on his own, but he's not exactly a badass.
96. alexi laiho - I've only heard him in Synergy. He plays some decent riffs, no extraodinary solos though.
97. akira takasaki - I still want to get a Loudness album. Haven't been able to find Thunder in the East.
98. Michael angelo - who?
99. johny kay and Michael monarh - who?
100. nick bowcott - Best surprise of the list[next to Brian Tatler]. This guy can definitely shred, but his main strength is his ability to write rocking songs and recruit the best tradional metal vocalist out there[Steve Grimmett].

That's what I think of the list.

This list is almost as ridiculous as Rolling Stone's. When you allow the readership to dictate who's the best, you get shit like this.

Like any list, these lists are so incredibly subjective. On what basis do you rate a guitar player? On the influence they've had? On the innovations they've made? On their technical ability? On their feel? On their songwriting ability? It's just too tough. I know who I like, I know who I don't. To me, none of these lists are worth the paper they are printed on. Which isn't to knock this thread, it's just my $0.02.

Warren Haynes should be in that list.

Guitar World and Guitar One are rags pretty much. Their only redeeming quality is the sheet music, which is usually 2-4 songs of nu-rock crap anyways, but still there is the occasionaly metal song transcribed.

Guitar Player is my favorite guitar mag. No sheet music, but the lessons are better, the spotlight is less on the crap bands, and they seem to cater less to the kiddies.

They have a much better "50 Greatest Players" list this month, as voted by readers. I didn't get to vote [img]images/smiles/icon_sad.gif[/img] . I must have missed the memo. Here's the top 10:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Stevie Ray Vaughn
3. Eric Clapton
4. Jimmy Page
5. Jeff Beck
6. Eddie Van Halen
7. Steve Vai
8. Joe Satriani
9. BB King
10. Carlos Santana

While the list certainly reflects the average age and interests of the reader, I can't say I disagree with any of it.

Randy Rhoads was #14, John Petrucci #22, and Yngwie was #27...again I just think this reflects the demographic rather than a lack of understanding of talent.

Best of all, Kurt Cobain is not to be found anywhere on the list. Any list with Cobain on it I think is immediately disqualified anyways. Neither is there a Jack White or that loser from the Chili Peppers.

I like this list. Not because I agree with it (Tony Iommi #1? PAH-LEEEEZ!), but because a good number of these guys NEVER get mentioned in any other magazine "Best Guitarists" poll or list. It's nice to see guys like Kai Hanson, Timo Tolki and Leslie West (he's from Mountain guys...and he's an incredible guitarist, see if you can find the "Leslie West Live" cd AWESOME SHIT!) on the list when they are usually ignored elsewhere.
