Who attended a concert by a metal/ hard rock band when they were at the heights of their powers? My favorites were Priest on the Screaming for Vengence tour in 1983, Van Halen on the 1980 Invasion Tour, Maiden on the Powerslave tour in 1985 and Ozzy on the Diary of a Madman Tour in 1982. Other honorable mentions were Metallica on the Justice tour in 1989 and Motley Crue when they opened for Ozzy in 1984. All of these bands were at their prime unlike the so-called reunion shows of late. |

I also saw the Crue/Ozzy show in '84.....Crue's prime anyway.
Some other's I saw in their prime (matter of opinion)....
Mercyful Fate - The Oath tour
Metal Church - The Dark tour
Triumph - Never Surrender tour - not sure if that was their prime...Allied Forces may have a good arguement.
Trouble - Run To the Light tour
Fastway - S/T tour
Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire tour
Anthrax - Persistance Of Time tour
Megadeth - Rust In Peace tour
That's probably it for the "in their prime" catagory. Some are hard to judge when exactly their prime was. I saw ZZ Top on the El Loco tour - not their best album, but the last of the "old school" ZZ top. I saw Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss tour, but I still dig Slayer and can't really choose their prime. |

Cool topic.
But to be honest with you, most of the memorable concerts I've been too was when bands were out of their prime (either before or after). And I think there are two reasons for that. One is because the shows are in smaller, more intimate, settings. And second, when bands are at their prime, the tours seem to be more of a revenue generator rather than playing music for the sake of playing music.
Seeing Kiss on the Creatures of the Night tour (last tour before the makeup came off) is a very special moment for me.
Seeing Tool play in front of only about 1000 people (right after Undertow came out) was a very special moment.
Seeing In Flames play in a bar with about 100 people in the audience was a very special moment.
I saw most of the hair bands and thrash bands (mid 80s to early 90s) plays at their prime. To be honest, not one of those shows (except Queensryche doing Mindcrime all the way through with the full production) is as memorable as some of the moments that I mentioned above. |

True, seeing bands just before they break can be very special. I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1984 with about 50 other souls. What a great night! |

Oh ya! I totally forgot about seeing Dio "Last in Line"/Dokken "Tooth and Nail" tour. Pretty much their primes IMO....although I've never been a Dokken fan. |
