1. eddie van halen - if it wasn't for eddie this list wouldn't exist and the world of rock music would be a very different place. he was the saviour of rock guitar like no other and he and dave invented a genre (cali-beach boys metal). the moment he slides his pick across the strings, glistening like a harp, at the opening of running with the devil he is crowned king.

2. joe satriani - it was a live performance at the top of a bill in the late 90s with steve vai and kenny wayne sheppard that solidifed my high regard for satch. his tone combined with a wall of confidence and accessible, melodic tunes makes him number two on the list.

3. steve vai - anyone who can fill eddie shoes at the height of vh-mania (1985) gets lifetime cred. he doesn't sound like eddie on eat 'em and smile but his hot-doggin' is so extreme we almost forget about 1984.

4. george lynch - he looked the coolest, he had the coolest guitars and he somehow represented the axeman as gunslinger - lynch hit the bullseye every time.

5. warren demartini - he shreds, he burns like no other, playing off the ryhthm guitars like blackout scorps and ratt has shitloads of badass tunes to boot.

I can't really add too much to the great lists already submitted....But here's mine (5) at the moment:

Tony Iommi - The Riffmeister
Angus Young - Great tone, great style
Robin Trower - Soulful, tasty licks
Warren Haynes - Great slide, great blues riffage, and the voice to go with it.
David Gillmour - Sweet fills, great tone, very tasty player

There's so many great guitarist's out there (being a mediocre guitarist myself), that it's hard to only pick 5. I love the metal guys like Mustaine, Schaffer and the Mercyful Fate boys - but the old school guys add soul to their playing that just moves me. I'll take one long, well placed, sustained A over a pound of shred anyday. Coincidentaly (but not really....) my 5 all play Gibson's and/or Fender's.

Good to see someone else give this guy props. Gov't Mule and Warren Haynes rule.

My 5 favorite guitarists are (in no particular order):
- Jimmy Page
- Tony Iommi
- EVH
- Randy Rhoads
- Warren Haynes

The question "Greatest Guitarist Ever" depends on the moment and the question...

In one sitting: Jimmy Page. "Achilles' Last Stand." Hard to believe.

Career: Tony Iommi. Dude created metal and then did it for 20 years before running out of steam.

Instrumental Album: Yngwie Malmsteen. Yes, two songs have vox, but his solo debut is brilliant. It's amazing what happens when a genius can't get laid.

Hair metal album: George Lynch on Dokken's "Tooth and Nail" beats EVH on the Van Halen debut. Remember that VH has two covers on it, plus the completely dumb "Jamie's Crying" and "Little Dreamer." Kudos to Dave Meneketti for Y & T's "In Rock We Trust."

Industrial/nu-Metal/post 80s: Tommy Victor of Prong on "Rude Awakening."

Riff: Iommi again, for "Paranoid."

Pairing: Tipton and Downing.

Punk: Reeves Gabrels on "Tin Machine" even beats Steve Jones on "Bollocks." Yes, folks, Reeves is THAT good.

German: Wolf Hoffmann beats Ulrich "Uli Jon" Roth. Both are great, though. And better than Michael Schenker.

Randy Rhodes: Randy Rhoads. Best at that ever. Jake E. Lee is runner-up. Still hasn't gotten the plane crash done, though.

Poser: Angus Young. Even beats Mick Mars. And that ain't easy.

Blues/bluesy rock: Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. No fukkin question.

70s American hard rock: Ted Nugent.

Fake hair on a genius: Ritchie Blackmore.

Pre-metal: Hendryx.

Dead: Hendryx and Rhodes toss-up, until Page kicks due to alcohol poisoning. Honorable mention to Dave Pritchard.

Not afraid of people knowing he is bald: Satriani.

Sell out: Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton on Queensryche's disgusting "Empire." Burn in hell, dorks. You didn't need the money.

Drunk: Chris Holmes. Even beats Page and EVH. At 6'5", Holmes can drink more in the morning than killed Hendryx.

Makeup: Ace Frehley.

Solo album while in a major band: Ace Frehley.

Bad skin/acne: Ace Frehley. Even beats Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield.

Fired by Dio: Craig Goldy.

lowest ratio of songwriting skills to guitar technique: Steve Vai.

Southern rock: Molly Hatchet. Don't even argue it.

Solo with Violin: Nigel Tufnel.

Chick: none. Chicks can't hold their smoke. That's a fact.
