first, greetings to all and it's good to see a lot of you still here.
I stayed out of the board for a very long time (3 years - and even back then I was not very active, mostly listen and read the boards).
I missed the community and of course all of the topics, so now I am in a new career (telecom went down the drain and hope electronics will pick up), divorced now (dropped one and picked up another...gutton for punishment).
second, i hope this stay is for good, like i said i miss everything about the board and of course the music.
and on to the topic.....i am back in a band and the eternal argument has reared its hugly head again....WHAT SONGS SHOULD WE COVER?
(let me state that it is a covers band, playing the usual weekend parties and the local very small club scene, dreams of making it BIG are far gone) so any suggestions? .......what would you enjoy to listen when hanging out with the wife/girlfriend and buddys at the local club and downing a few cold ones.....
here is brief list of one i think would go well (although some may diagree)
1 - rain - the cult
2 - paranoid or nib - black sabbath
3 - say what you will - fastway
4 - no one like you - scorps
5 - welcome to the jungle - gnr
6 - perfect strangers - deep purple
7 - for those about to rock - ac/dc
what do you think? any suggestions... |

I think it really depends on your audience, and especially the vocal abilities of your singer. Nothing worse than someone trying to cover a Sabbath song in a falsetto voice, ya know what I mean? If you are looking for a classic rock or hard rock sound:
UFO - Lights Out
UFO - Venus
UFO - Too Hot to Handle
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Thin LIzzy - Cowboy Song
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Ted Nugent - Dog Eat Dot
Ted Nugent - Free For All
Go for the songs that are not so common, but have a nice groove to them.
If it's a club that you hang out with, you probably have an idea what the audience is into. Watch their reactions to different songs, and make your selections based on that.
Again, one of the most important considerations for cover tunes is your singer's abilities. It is fare easier to choose songs that match your singer's voice that it is to change your singer's voice to match the songs.
Just my 2 cents.

Like Tic3 said, a lot of it depends on your audience and singer.
If the audience is comprised of a lot of women, you might consider going down the path of least resistance and play the stuff that's familiar and danceable. You won't get much respect from the true hard-rockers in the crowd for playing "Living After Midnight" and "Pour Some Sugar On Me", but the chicks will dance to it -- which will make the guys looking to score happy and also make your band look better. You're compromising your integrity by going down this road, but let's face it: No one's going to dance to old Rush & Slayer covers.
Speaking of "Living After Midnight", there are a few other hard rock/metal tunes I would stay away from:
Sabbath - Paranoid, Iron Man, War Pigs
Judas Priest - Living After Midnight, Breaking The Law
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
These are all songs that have been overplayed on the radio for decades, and they aren't exactly the most complicated pieces to play. Few people will be impressed with your ability to pull these songs off.
I'm glad to see a lot of UFO suggestions in this thread. My contributions would be "Gettin' Ready", "Dreaming Of Summer" and "Deadman Walking". No one will recognize them, but they all have great hooks.
Good luck. |

After re-reading my last post, it occurred to me that I overlooked the most important factor of all: your band.
Unless the band is a major source of your income, you should play what YOU like. The songs you pick should be ones your entire band has fun playing. Plus, if people see you having fun on stage, they're more likely to get into it too.
You didn't mention whether your band has one or two guitarists (or a keyboard player), but that should also be considered when putting together a setlist.
Based on the tunes you picked, I'm guessing your audience is more into the 80's than the newer stuff, and you're more into hard rock than hair metal or speed metal. Here are a few songs I think would be fun to play and people would dig whether they recognized them or not:
Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
Velvet Revolver - Slither
Tonic - Take Me As I Am
Masters Of Reality - Domino
AC/DC - Riff Raff
Van Halen - On Fire
Riot - Altar Of The King
Badlands - Soul Stealer
Badlands - 3 Day Funk (you can't go wrong with Badlands)
UFO - (pretty much anything)
Dust For Life - Step Into The Light
Burden Brothers - Beautiful Night |
