No problem, Whofan. I know how those late-night posts can get. My only point was that Metallica rarely made top 5, and like yourself I think a lot more would have included them if it was top 10 or top 20.

This thread has really surprised me. I own more than 5000 CDs, and from these I've chosen what I consider to be the best 12,000 pop/rock songs (about half of them are what I would consider "hard rock"), and converted them to 192k MP3s for use on my personal player. And for all that, there are a significant number of songs in this thread that I never considered as one of the 12,000 best (let alone 5 best), only because I've never listened to them before.

This has me really excited, because I'm going to go back to my CDs and listen to many of the songs listed on this thread. I have enough respect for everyone here that I'm positive I'm going to find some "hidden gems", songs which are really good that I've never listened to before, and that I can add to my playlist.

1. Ozzy - Diary of a Madman - Randy put his all in this song.

2. Megadeth - Hanger 18 - This song has it all.

3. Gary Moore - Shapes of Things - Most underated guitarist shows that he can put every lick in one song without overkilling the song.

4. Van Halen - Mean Street - Just down right mean playing.

5. Yngwie - Icarus' Dream Suite Op. 5 - Where classical meets rock.

Random thoughts:
Reading through the other responses, I love Bark at the Moon, and it would have been on my list if my list was 10.

Crimson Glory's Burning Bridges - I bought the CD back in the 80's for the 2 songs that got airplay (Lonely and Lady of Winter), but when I heard this song, I loved it.

Would love to put Boston on this list, but it was top 5.

It may not change your thinking but Shapes of Things is a Yardbird cover song. Personally, it's tough to name a cover song one of the all time greatest songs. That being said, I do like that song but End of the World would be my Gary Moore choice! Smile

Yep, knew it was a cover. But the way he did it, especially live (from We Want Moore) is so incredible. It doesn't even sound like the original.
Another great song is Murder in the Skies.
