I'd have to say Alice Cooper when I was about 7 or 8, then Van Halen when I was about 12.

Being born in the mid 60's, I became a product of the hard rockin' 70's. So for me it's the Zeppelin, Purple, Hatchet, Nugent types that groomed me as a youth. But the one band that really did it for me was FOGHAT. Like I said in another thread, their Live album was the first real hard rock purchase I ever made. I was about 11 years old, so it really made an impression on me. I never get tired of Slow Ride, Fool For The City or I Just Wanna Make Love To You. But I still love Honey Hush, Home in My Hand or Road Fever.

After that album, then came the typical AOR stuff of the time (Styx, Foreigner, Boston, Queen, etc.). It really wasn't until a year later in '78 when Van Halen came out. That was it. Straight out guitar crunching, vocal screaming, pounding drums and steady bass.

i was born in 63 and got a early on start
but the journey to get here is just like you describe it.
the experence was the same across the country in that era
what the 60's had created in culture, we the next generation,
are now flyin that flag.

good reflection on the way it was "Swidman"

I guess I started late and slow. It was the Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd (and even some disco crap somewhere), but once I listened to AC/DC that was the ticket.

While not considered metal it seemed a natural progression from the following: Deep Purple, Queen, Styx, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and The Eagles

A few others that come to mind that I feel trended me toward the harder stuffs... XD Steppenwolf, Bloodrock, Buffalo Springfield, Iron Butterfly and Jimi Hendrix

Jeez when you start really just thinking back on all the bands one used to listen to the list can get very large. LOL
