Alright, I'm gonna say it, and no one can stop me:
I have Def Leppard's "Vault," which is mostly songs from "Hysteria" and later, and I think it's great. Yeah, that's right, I think it is an excellent album. And there's nothing you can do to change my mind, so KISS MY A$$!
But seriously, I do like it, and I don't see why their later stuff gets bashed so much. And don't give me that "it's too weak," crap, because I definitely don't think so, and I listen to more extreme and extremely heavy stuff than most of the people on this board (except for Metalfilm, Paul G, and a couple others).
So really, what's the deal? |

I can explain my distaste for their later works. Phil Collen (sp?). With his addition on the Pyromania album, they really took a step into a commercial direction, although I do like Pyromania quite a bit. I do believe his influence made them go more into a techo/electronic sound. Not to mention Rik losing his arm and having to use electronic drums.
I will say, and I mean this when I say it, their latter day stuff is weak compared to On Through the Night and High and Dry, I don't think anyone can argue differently. With their new direction (Hysteria to present), they have become more palatable to the public.
I do like a few songs from Hysteria, mainly because the band I was in back in 1987 did a few tracks from it. But everything after that does nothing for me. Too many layered vocals and the music bores me senseless. Vivian Campbell needs to be in a band where he can shred a little. Def Leppard surely does not shred.
Just my thoughts.

I agree....It's not that I don't like Hysteria, I just really liked the sound from the first 2(or three) and any derivation from that path was downhill in my opinion. Hey, if that is what they want to play now then so be it, I just don't like it nearly as much. I have more respect for them than I do for Metallica. |

I'm sorry, but Metallica, for all its decline, has yet to record a song as stupid as "Let's Get Rocked" or "Make Love Like a Man." On the totem pole of sellouts, Def Leppard has the top level. |

hmmm, Ain't My Bitch and Turn the Page are pretty stupid IMHO. And half the songs on Kill 'em All are laughable lyrically...but hey, that WAS the early 80's.
