Despite what some believe was Napster's attempt to plant an ID in users' computers, Metallica files are back in play.
Technology got them onto Napster. Technology got them banned. Now technology is helping some of the 317,377 blacklisted users start downloading music again. Even Metallica's music.
But they are also upset that Napster Inc. may have used technology to trick them into downloading a tracking ID into their personal computers, helping the company enforce its ban.
But within hours of the ban Wednesday, a user logged on as "Cryptic" had posted a workaround for the banned users on Napster message boards. He became an immediate hero among fellow users. |

Does anyone know if the version 6 beta download of napster is a real deal or is it just a trojan horse for the users they're trying to block?
I don't think I'm on Lars' schidt list. |

I was one of the users banned from Napster. I just want to say that the workarounds do work. I tried many things, but I am not sure which one worked. One thing seems evident, you have to edit the registry. I would not recommend this unless you are comfortable with the chance of really messing something up. Also, I never wanted those damn Craptallica songs anyway. It was a friend of mine (really). It was before we even knew it was an issue. So, I get banned with no warning. I think Napster should have given us a chance to get rid of the songs. I do think there should be some rules to this sharing thing. I will not download bands songs that do not want me to. Oh well, I am back on Napster now and able to feed the metal machine. Damn, it feels good. |

Of course, I would never counsel someone to do something illegal (I think I took an oath against that somewhere), but if I were a banned user, I would simply sign Napster's on-line affidavit saying "you got the wrong guy." Metallica will not sue you individually. You are back in the game. Perjury aside, that is. |
