Gamma Ray--Powerplant. Excellent.

Judas Priest--Stained Class. Good, but I still like "Painkiller" better.

Queensryche--Operation:Mindcrime

Sodom--Code Red. Amazing. Modernized thrash, it really kills.

Hammerfall--Glory to the Brave single. Their cover of Stormwitch's "Ravenlord" is easily the best song they've done.

On order:

In Flames--Clayman. It was never a question if, just when, I would get it.

Scorpions--Animal Magnetism (remaster). At only $7.80, by far the cheapest new CD I've ever bought.

Any new/bonus/whatever tracks on the Scorps remaster?

Voivod Lives. Recorded from two shows in 96. 11 tracks, 7 from Negatron, 1 cover. The four remaining tracks are all pre-Nothingface. My favorite era of Voivod spans Nothingface through the Outer Limits and it wasn't represented at all. A B+ for performance, a C for track selection. B overall.

At the Gates--Slaughter of the Soul. I own only one other ATG CD, Terminal Spirit Disease. I once heard that Slaughter was a better CD. Not in my opinion. It's good but not exceptional, lacking some of the variance I'd come to expect with Terminal. How do the rest of you feel about At the Gates?

cdaddy: Don't know yet, it hasn't arrived. I'll try to remember and post when it does. I expect it tomorrow or the next day.

Personally, I love "Slaughter of the Soul." Favorite songs are probably the title track, "World of Lies," and Track 10 (forgot the title), but I don't think there's a weak song on it. In fact, I actually like the At the Gates school of Gothenburg metal better than the In Flames style. But I will say that I think Soilwork has outdone At the Gates at their own game.

Raider;
How does the Sodom compare with Destruction's All Hell Breaks Loose?
I never really listened to Sodom, but am curious.

Ironchef;
I always thought Voivod's Dimension Hatross was a masterpiece. Killing Technology also had some pretty good songs. Were you ever able to get into War & Pain or Rrrroooaaaarrrr (god what a stupid title)?
I found them to be unlistenable. I am not too sure of the releases in order or their titles after DH. Could you help me out?

Yes, Hatross was quite good; I need to replace my old cassette copy with a CD soon.

After Dimension Hatross, in this order:

Nothingface (which I consider a masterpiece)
Angel Rat (largely ignored, but well worth listening to)
The Outer Limits (last album featuring Denis "Snake" Belanger--damn I miss him!)
Negatron (first album featuring Eric Forrest, bass/vocals)
Phobos
Kronik (? don't know much about this one)
...Lives

I've got RRRoaaaaRRR (or whatever, yeah, stupid title) on CD and spin it every once in a great while, but it made no strong impression on me. I've never even heard War and Pain, even though I have it on vinyl (no turntable!). The first Voivod that really stuck in my mind was Killing Technology.

Accept- Balls to the Wall- tied with Metalheart as best accept album. awesome riffs and solos, but of course some of the dumbest lyrics ever "do you want to impress her? then write here a lovely letter" sounds absolutely ridiculous. still a good album. classic even in its flaws and cheesiness(8.5)

Manowar- Hail to England- Not as good as i thought it was from when i heard it quite some time ago. still a decent manowar album and probably in their top three(Into glory ride, Sign of the Hammer). Army of Immortals is awesome. They need to come out with thier new album though. (8).

Manowar- Hell on earth part 1- havent gotten a chance to watch it yet but i will as soon as i get a chance and then ill post what i think of it.

by the way is soilwork chainheart machine any good? ive seen it in the store and i thought someone recommended it here. and how old is soilwork? im looking for cool new bands to get into.

Is Soilwork any good??? You bet, if you like In Flames/Arch Enemy/Shadows Fall/Dark Tranquility - they fall right into that niche and you will enjoy them.

Angel Dust "Enlighten the Dark.." - a good solid power metal album that has some dirt under its fingernails (if that makes any sense).

AC-DC "fly on the Wall" - replacing vinyl here, I always liked it except for the last 2 tracks Save the Man and Back in Business. The show a few weeks ago was incredible.

Uriah Heep "Abominog" need the re-mastered version not the tinny sounding version I found in a used store.

Budgie "Deliver US from Evil" - Excellent

Dark Tranquility "the Minds I" - I didn't care much for this one, it's a little rough, unrefined and boring.

Coming soon: Nevermore/Helloween/Symphony X (any good?)/Tribe of Gypsies (Roy Z)/Raven re-issues/
