I think many of the 70's hard/heavy rock drummers were quite innovative, skilful, and sounded more interesting than a lot of the 80's drummers. Now to my question. If you were to pick three of the most talented and interestingly sounding drummers of the 70's, who would they be according to you? |

My choices in the following order:
1. Bill Ward of Black Sabbath
2. Ginger Baker of Baker Gurvitz Army
3. Les Binks of Judas Priest |

Nicko McBrain (Pat Travers)
Leonard Haze (Y&T)
Cozy Powell (Rainbow, among many others)

Screw Phil with Genesis - check out Phil Collins with Brand X - he absolutely DESTROYS on their stuff. Easily up there with Bruford.
My picks are:
Peart , Paice , Barlow , Phillips , Aldridge , Collins , Bruford.
I think in general 70's Rock and Metal was a little more innovative and experimental than 80's. It was more of a testing ("jamming") ground for artists.
The 80's became a little more "formula" but also introduced some awesome drummers - one name? SCOTT TRAVIS..
i believe Aldridge played on 2 or 3 Travers albums. Black Pearl , the LIVE album from 1978 and another. |
