Just putting this out for discussion; initial reviews for this CD were ecstatic (partly in that there were no surprises) (that is, nobody's rapping), and when I picked it up, I was a little disappointed. It's a really good disc, but I dunno, it just seemed a little more stripped-down than I wanted, less, uh, Gothenburg-y. It's not exactly what I wanted, but I like it just the same. At any rate, it was very apparent to me that Anders Frieden's claim that there were changes afoot were well founded.
Then came the reviews - every one I've read since! - that said ho-hum, another In Flames record, same as the last four. All I've gotta say is, huh?
So what do you all think; is it just me? |

I love the new one.Ho hum?? Fukk that, it kicks a.ss.In Flames are one of the best bands out there without a doubt.I listen to them almost as much as Nevermore.I just picked up Jester Race yesterday. Now the collection is complete. They all rule.To me each one has it's own unique feel.
Yeah,it's the same old In Flames, AMAZING!! |

Tyrannorabbit (what a great freakin name!), try to look at it as a band trying to expand its musical language. Take a look at another of my (and yours?) fave gothenburg bands, Dark Tranquillity. If anything, Projector and Haven are even further removed from The Gallery than Clayman is from The Jester Race, but does that make them any less tuneful and moving? Not for me. At this point, I am less interested in the "idea" of In Flames and more on the truly great songs that they are creating. And on this album, I shot my load over"Bullet Ride," "Pinball Map," "Swim," "As the Future Repeats Today" and so many more. |

I find each of the last 3 (don't have Jester yet) to be unique, powerful, and all excellent. My view of which is better may change from day to day. clayman has a bit more commercial or universal sound but each tune is excellent. It probably has the best overal vocal arrangements of the last 3. The only place Clayman is less superior is in the lead guitar work. not that it is less difficult or simpler, but that there is less leads.
As for ho-hum reviews, I just dont understand that. This is a maturing band, I just hope the next one can be held up to Clayman.

Personally, I believe there are very significant differences from their earlier work. It's also my favorite of theirs. I mean face it, I respect them one of the originators of the Gothenburg scene, but I think there were other bands who did the more "pure" Gothenburg sound better. But with In Flames expanding into other territory no one else is doing, it just makes them better. |
