Exactly. Keys can be used to enhance metal songs as intros or background or sparing effects, but the moment they step into the foreground and distract from the guitar they send the song's wuss factor skyrocketing. The obvious exception is ballads, for which the use of keys is quite natural, although a piano is better. Keys are also somewhat more acceptable in progressive metal, but in the end they are a big reason that is not one of my favorite genres.

There are many bands I like which I think could rock much harder and more convincingly if they'd minimize keyboard usage. Pretty Maids comes to mind.

Yes, but not necessarily a proud part. I can hardly count the number of Deep Purple songs I think could be vastly improved by removing the keyboards. "Highway Star" for example is a mean, in-your-face rocker until that silly and lengthy keyboard interlude.

I have to admit I've never heard much Metal Church. Is that a cool version? Maybe I'll have to check it out.

Keyboards have there place in metal ..AS far as Savatage goes. They wouldnt be the same without them. That is what works for them .I personally love Savatage's music.Ozzy uses keyboards and still rocks. You just have to know how to use them in a correct way.

Judging by the 30 second clip it's not bad. The use of guitar in place of keyboards for the solo is a definite improvement. Now about those vocals...
