On a recent trip to a used record shop I picked up Shok Paris's "Steel And Starlight." I was fairly impressed, and wondered why there aren't many bands who play that kind of metal anymore. Can anyone recommend any other American style power metal(by which I mean they don't sound like Helloween/Hammerfall/etc., and use keyboards extremely sparingly or not at all) similar to bands such as Shok Paris, Manowar, Warrior, older Savatage, some of the grittier Pretty Maids, and Lizzy Borden?

Preferably good bands. I think Vicious Rumors for one is pretty lousy.

The obvious pick for 2002 would be Iced Earth.

Just received the new SEVEN WITCHES feat people from Crimson Glory and Speeed (Jack Frost). Only browsed through it once, but it sounds really good. Also check Frost's previous band SPEEED (yes with 3 "E's"). Others: ONWARD, ICED EARTH, NEVERMORE...

Wasn't Speeed with Aaron Randall on vocals?

Don't know if this band is exactly what you're talking about, but I highly recommend ASKA's "Avenger." Their release just prior to that one, "Nine Tongues," is also pretty good.

In this type of Power-thrash, the Americanized Power metal is ICED EARTH, good call, others are very nice selections.

To those check out:

Manticora - thrashy, grindy, heavy, epic
Imagika - pure heavy san fran bay thrash, modern elements
Lefay - Nice almost progressive interludes, post metallica-black heaviness.
Antithesis - Reminds me of ole Savatage with some prog elements, great melody yet heavy.
Annihilator - Jeff Waters thrash explosion
Nevermore - nuff said
Eldritch - italian, yet thrashy modern and NO holds barred
Control Denied - blasts of perfection.
