Of course, what Queensryche calls "on the heels of...", I call "four goddamn years after".

I think Pantera evolved into what they are. Look at that picture of their glam days and look how young they are! Dime has said he was influenced by Kiss, Van Halen, and Priest and when you are forming a metal band in the 80's with a superstar guitarist what other direction do you go? Now they are in a routine, They are sticking to a formula that's tried and true. They need to take a big risk with their next CD and try to break the routine. They did that once with Trendkill, and while musically it's probably their best work, vocally it's their worst. Phil's lyrics were great but he totally ruined many songs with his screaming. And the last CD they tried so hard to go back to Vulgar that they practically re-wrote the same album. I love every album they've ever done but they are ready for a change. I don't think they sold out at all because they are going in the opposite direction if anything. My vote would be for #3 in the original question. It's also the direction I've gone with my tastes. In the 80's I was into a lot of glam but now I don't really care for poppy-metal.I don't think there's many sellouts in the metal world today besides the obvious, the teen pop pretty much has the sellout market cornered.

bands have 2 do what it takes 2 succeed and yea in most parts a change of style is in with the fads of 2day...bands ways of getting publicity needs 2 be as personal as there material is...gotta know that music bizz is a bizz of rejection from what ppl like and dislike...first off, the concept of selling out must be addressed... first of all, let's define
the dark aspects of selling out that most people don't realize... the true
meaning of this i think is a band/artist who will do ANYTHING to make money,
who will jump for any carrot on the end of any stick to get that last bit of
quick $$$... look at that, then think about bands in the past that have been
labeled as sellouts most common Metallica...yea they did the metal scene justice and what others say "did it all"...the point is, truly selling out is a condition typified by extremes,
extremes that none of the bands listed i believe have indulged in...i hear day after day people talk about how certain musicians/artists are not"rock" or are not true "metal"
this assessment again short-sights what really matters... do you like the
music? if you do, that is all that really matters.....you have no one to prove
anything to but yourself...don't bow down before the conformity that is
shunning music because peer pressure convinces you it's not a "true" example
of the genre.. i say listen to music because you like it, and for no other reason... don't EVER
allow your opinion to be polluted by music critics, friends who try to pressure
you, or by crowds of people who claim to represent the "scene" of a
particular genre...it's an ideal worth striving for.. to each his own, but I implore you...do give thema try, you won't be disappointed....

Bravo Zero, I couldn't have said it better myself. Why does it even have to be categorized? Maybe to a certain extent money is involved, but why can't it just be a natural changing of the times? We can't always look and sound the same throughout our entire lives, we are constantly evolving and changing as we grow and learn. I myself was extremely disappointed when Metallica cut their hair, if I had my way every man would have long hair, but I had to realize that not everyone wants to stay stuck in the 80's like I do! LOL And yes I remember a time when they said they would never do videos, then along came One. It rocked, but thats beside the point. We all thought they sold out...or were they just trying to reach a broader audience? Theres certainly nothing wrong with that, thats a major goal of any band. As far as Queensryche goes, I agree with Genera Zod, I don't believe they ever sold out, they've always done things their own way, after Empire they took a turn and got lost somewhere, theres probably one song on Promised Land that I even cared for. The point is, everyone hates change, but it happens, its inevitable. At least we have recordings to remind us of what we loved. That, will NEVER change.
