Okay, that's true only sometimes.

I just got Opeth's Deliverance, and I have Blackwater Park too. Deliverance sounds good so far, I'm listening to it as I float around here a little. As usual my mind drifts around when I'm doing more than one thing at a time, and after listening for a while the music again caught my attention and I checked the player to see what song I was on. Still on song one, after what seemed like an hour. Okay, I know it couldn't have been longer than, uh, 11 minutes and 10 seconds, but my point is.... Opeth's songs are FREAKIN LONG!

What's your opinion on, say, 13 minutes songs? Better? Worse? The same? I have to admit that bands like Dream Theater lose me with these epic songs that go on forever, although I don't really feel that way about Opeth even though their songs are so FREAKIN LONG. So, I guess for me it depends on the band. I think generally speaking though, I'd prefer songs not to eclipse the 5 minute mark. I do like Opeth though, even though they seem to think I have nothing better to do than sit around all stinkin day and listen to Opeth.

Did I mention that Opeth's songs are FREAKIN LONG!

i prefer the epic songs for some reason. I like the good ol 7-10 minute sagas. dont really like longer than 10 minutes though, then it starts getting a little long, with some exceptions.

I like a good 11-minute song as long as they have 11 minutes worth of material

So many times its like bands get this idea in their head that they have to have an 11-minute song, but they have enough material for a 5-minute song, so they just keep repeating everything incessantly. That annoys the f*ck out of me, and turns what could have been a good 5-minute song into something that I never listen to. Maiden was prone to do this on their longer songs, and plenty of other power- and black metal bands do this. Never seems to be much of a problem for thrash or death bands for some reason..

But when a band really has enough ideas to make the song 11 minutes long, then I love it. My favorite new example is Blind Guardian's "And Then There Was Silence." 13 minutes long, and every second counts.

I agree with Raider. Just like a CD, if a song is longer it better keep the listener involved for it's entire length. Just as I don't like 60 minute CDs that should have been 40 minute CDS, I don't like 11 minute songs that should be 6 minute songs.

But that doesn't just apply to longer songs either, it can apply to shorter songs as well. A good example is Bruce Springsteen's Born In the USA CD. That is filled with a bunch of songs that should have been 3 minutes long, but it seems like at the end of most songs he has a 1 to 1.5 minute jam session where nothing much really happens. So there are a lot of 4 minute songs that would be better served if they were 3 minute songs as well.

I agree with what Raider said.

But for there is also the context of when I'm listening to the long songs. If I'm on a long car ride I like to listen to shorter catchy songs that I can keep singing along to, and then longer songs with tons of solos and stuff get on my nerves, because I'd rather have the short catchy songs to keep me focused. But if I'm sitting down typing, eating, reading, or playing games then bring on the long songs. I still probably prefer songs that are shorter, but if you have a well written long song(like I like Heading for Tomorrow by Gamma Ray - 15 minutes) then I'll dig it then.

It's just their style...Opeth wouldn't be Opeth with primarily 5-minute songs. However, I agree that songs like this need that much worthy material to keep them aloft, which is where I find Opeth often stumbles, repeating riffs like a mantra for four minutes on end. Which isn't a metal thing, it's a trance thing, and it ain't my bag. Unless it's Trance from the show Andromeda, she's cute. But she's barely on it anymore and the show sucks beyond suck this season anyway, so to hell with it.

I think song length is fairly irrelevant. However, as some have already stated, there are those bands who get lost when they journey beyond the six or seven minute mark. Personally, I think Blind Guardian's "And then there was Silence" is a perfect example of this. To me, this song sounds fragmented. It sounds as if they set out to write an 11 minute song. On the flip side of that coin is, what I feel is the best song of the year, Symphony X's "The Odyssey". This song is 24+ minutes of musical bliss. It never loses it's focus, and never strays off the beaten path.

I definitely prefer shorter songs. I can count on one hand the number of songs over 10 minutes that I truly enjoy and even those contain some padding.

10 is good for an epic. And no offence to the guitar players here but I get pretty board with a solo that goes past 2 minutes tops. After that it just feels like filler. The only exception is a total instramental.

So anything between 5 to 10 minutes is cool. Any shorter and sometimes it feels over to fast. Though I guess there's something to be said for quickies if they rock.
