I suppose I might agree with that qualifying remark if I thought it was true. Since there are a number of folks here who like Yngwie, I'll refrain from poking fun at him. Suffice it to say, I'll take Romeo over Malmsteen any day of the week.

Though my enthusiasm for Martin's writing has slightly waned in recent years, I still find his Lester Bangs/Chuck Eddy derivations highly appealing, his enthusiasm and love for metal shining through in nearly every review he likes. There are writers in the metal realm who are FAR worse than Martin.

Liz Ciavarella from Metal Maniacs is, more often than not, highly irritating and suffers from diarrhea of the mouth (er, pen) way too often (as in her final line of a Fall Silent album review -- "get this or die in a plane crash" -- which hit the stands no more than four days after September 11, 2001).

Vinnie Apicella loves the music and has boundless enthusiasm, but his style is either cloying or nondescript. His sentences run on and on and on and on. And, worst of all for a reviewer, either he seems to like everything he reviews or his criticism is so muffled as to make it wholly untraceable.

Some of Metal Maniacs and Terrorizer's new/second-string batch of writers (Dylan P. Gadino, Stan Modo, Nelly Liger) are terrible, as not only do their tastes veer towards nu-metal cluelessness but their styles are smug and know-it-all without actually bothering to display any knowledge.

With that said, there are a lot of great writers out there: nearly all of the staffs at Terrorizer and Unrestrained!, Mike G at Metal Maniacs when he's not kissing Pantera/Slayer's asses, Jeff Wagner and Chris Maycock (METAL!, ex-Metal Maniacs), the editors of Isten, Jim Raggi (Lamentations of the Flame Princess) and, if you'll pardon the self-aggrandizement, myself.

Oh, so would I - I mean, I still have all my SX albums, whereas I got rid of about half my Yngwie albums, and the only reason I kept _Trilogy_ was for the last track.

Jake - I've got another song from The Odyssey on the latest EMS show. Show #50.

I've also got my review of The Odyssey up as well. Personally, I think my review gets to the point a little better than Popoff's (although I do like some of his reviews, and tend to agree with his assessments of albums more often than I disagree with them). Sometimes he just tries to hard to be stylish in his reviews rather than being concerned about getting his point across.

I have to agree, that review wasn't one of Popoff's best. He still gave it an 8.5,although I think it was even better than that.

I like Martin Popoff's work. I share his tastes, and usually when he likes something,I do too. Over the years,he's introduced me to many bands that I would have never known about had I not read his reviews.

Hear hear. Martin was my first real introduction to everything from UFO and Thin Lizzy to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.

But, ah, I will never forgive him for his poor scores for countless pioneer black metal albums!

I think I usually agree with his grades, but I think I've learned more about bands from this board(and a webpage that no longer exists- The Sentinel Site) than I do from any one reviewer.
