MTV Names Metallica As Its 3rd 'mtvICON'
1 hour, 32 minutes ago Add Entertainment - AP to My Yahoo!

NEW YORK - MTV is celebrating the two-decade career of Metallica (news - web sites) by naming the heavy metal group as its third "mtvICON."

The Grammy-winning band will be the subject of a tribute by other artists and celebrities on May 3 in Los Angeles; the event will premiere on MTV three days later.

"This tribute special will not only celebrate their long and legendary career, but will underscore their importance to today's music landscape and their vast influence on other artists," Tom Calderone, executive vice president of music and talent programming at MTV and MTV2, said Monday.

MTV has previously honored Janet Jackson (news) and Aerosmith (news - web sites).

Thanks guys for helping establish the careers of Korn, Linkin Park and Limp Buscuit.

If Metallica is an ICON, then wouldn't it be fair to say that Iron Maiden is a SUPER - MEGA ICON, since they helped incluence Metallica?

My mind boggles at the thought of how incredibly lame this show will be...
I can hardly wait for the Avril Lavigne cover of Creeping Death, or the Chris Isaak version of Until It Sleeps. No Doubt is sure to WOW the crowd with their cover of King Nothing, and the legendary metal cover songstress, Tori Amos, will surely lend her immeasurable skill to a rousing piano-based version of One. Seated in the front row, our HEROES will sit smugly in their Versace suits, hair coiffed JUST SO ( except for Ulrich, who will attempt maximum coverage over his balding pate ), jewelry gleaming against the stage lights...breathtaking. The only "lowlights" of the entire show will be the clips of when our fashion-plates were scruffy young ne'er-do-wells in torn t-shirts and dirty jeans, playing that NOISY "thrash metal" back when they didn't realize the commercial potential of slowing ( and dumbing ) it down.

Then your hosts, Carson Daly, John Norris ( also attempting maximum follicle stretching ) and "Puck", the zany ugly pimply dirty bike messenger with a heart of mud from The Real World, will call our boys up onto the stage. While JAYMZ and LARRRZ hog the mike with their rags-to-riches-to-crap story, Kirk will suggestively fondle an entire plate of fruit, and Rob Trujillo will know his role and shut his mouth, standing well out of camera range while his new bosses lavish him with loving praise and backhanded compliments.

As with almost everything else mtv presents, except for that Sorority Life show ( that blond chick Candace is HOT ),I will pass.

I beleive you. He's hot right now which may mean multiple nights per city in turn meaning mucho dinereo. Basically, the more big names, the more ticket sales, etc. You can bet, if M & M were selling under 500,000 units per recording he wouldn't even be a thought for this tour.
