AND OCEANS
A.M. G.O.D.
Century Media

I despise both modern death-metal and tehno music-but put the two together and you have something pretty unusual...so goddamn unusual it actually sounds kinda cool. A.M. G.O.D. opens with a track called "Intelligence is Sexy" which starts with a traditional metal riff, then, from outta nowhere, comes this techno keyboard loop, then a killer drum beat kicks in, then bursts into an ultra-heavy Venom-ish riff. Very unique indeed, it's just too band those god awful death-metal vocals come in and ruin everything. The third track, "Tears Have No Name" is similar, but this song starts with the techno loop and then bursts into a full-on metal fury. What makes this so cool is the fact that no techno drum beats are used-it's all live drums, guitars and bass that underlay a dark sampled techno-loop (none of that happy-sounding techno shit). It's a shame these are really the only two songs of this style (the last track, "New Model World" is full-on drum & bass techno.) That was actually the only thing remotely interesting that this Scandinavian band has to offer, as the remaining six songs are your typical death-metal crap.

DUST FOR LIFE
Dust For Life
Wind Up

From the label that introduced Creed to the world, comes the debut CD from Memphis rockers Dust For Life. This band has created a strong buzz opening for the likes of Buck Cherry, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park, and Creed. I was surprisingly impressed with this CD, although nothing terribly original, the band writes good tunes and are quite talented to boot. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Gavin has a strong voice, and even when he croons, he sounds good. His thick, hypnotic voice is more akin to Lane Staley or Scott Weiland, rather than pathetic whiners like Eddie Vedder and that dude from Creed. Obviously influenced by bands like Alice and STP, Dust For Life fit right in with today's modern-rock radio market.

Some of the stronger cuts on the CD include; "Dragonfly," "Poison," "I Don't Mind," and the closing track appropriately entitled "The End," which is a great acoustic piece with a cool southern tinge, sounding like Zeppelin meets the Almond Brothers. This song features great vocals and awesome fretwork from frontman Gavin, who comes across like Chris Cornell meets Robert Plant.
