K.K. Downing Interview Page 8
By Bob Nalbandian & Fredrik Hjelm

BN: It's interesting to see how you and producer Tom Allom utilized the whole house. The guitar tones and drum sounds were so big and thick on that album! It had such a full live sound, unlike the previous records you did with James Guthrie (Hell Bent...) or Dennis MacKay (Stained Class), which sounded so thin in comparison.

KK: This was the first record we recorded in an actual house, which had a lot of different rooms. Everything was very live sounding, with wooden floors. We recorded the drums in the hallway, so there was a lot more natural ambiance as opposed to synthetic stuff from a very dead studio.

FH: What do you think of Halford's album Resurrection?

KK: I think there's some real good stuff on there. And like most albums, I think there are some songs that aren't quite as strong. It's nice to see him doing what he does best, that's the most rewarding thing. I'm glad he realized what his fan-base is and what people want from him. And I think the lyrical content is good on a lot of the songs, we can relate to a lot of the lyrics on the album. He's actually here in Los Angeles at the moment working on a new record so hopefully we'll get to see him this weekend.

FH: Speaking of lyrics, I heard Halford in an interview talk about the fact that he occasionally would sneak in gay references in the lyrics to old Judas Priest songs. Were you aware of that?

KK: No, not at the time. But we became aware of it later when people would mention to us about "Fire Island" and some of the French lyrics. There were little innuendos in there, but what could I say...we didn't know about them.
