ZAKK WYLDE INTERVIEW Page 4
By Jason Oldejans
JO: I had the privilege of seeing you guys, supporting the debut Black Label album, at a small club called the Jackson Hole in Phoenix. Do you prefer playing small venues like that?
ZW: If you ask any true musician that, they'll just say as long as they're playing. First and foremost, that's the reason I started playing, for the pure love of it. If somebody says that they only like playing in front of small audiences and they don't like playing in front of 60,000 people, they're full of shit. I mean, that's a different kind of an adrenaline rush right there. Whether you're playing in front of 2 people or 60,000, it's still ass kicking. When you're playing somewhere that's got 400 people or 1,400, I mean, you're just in this sweatbox and its just absolutely insane and everyone is just going completely ballistic, that's a whole other experience in itself.
JO: I read in the latest issue of Guitar World that you're currently listening to Frank Marino's Power Rock n Roll...
ZW: Well, Frank Marino rips, man! When they asked me last time what my all-time favorite record was I think I said Friday Night In San Francisco with Al Demiola, McLaughlin etc...But I also love Back In Black as well. If you want to know what a pure guitar playing record sounds like just for the sake of someone who's a f**king amazing guitar player, it would be Frank Marino, Al Demiola, and all of those guys.
JO: If you could name the one person who has changed your life, who would that be?
ZW: I guess, it would the person who created beer.
JO: So, when is there going to be a Black Label beer bottle?
ZW: We're trying to get a beer because I know I'll make a hell of a lot more money doing that than I will making music. The demograph is slightly higher (laughs).
JO: What are your top two beers at the moment?
ZW: Sierra Nevada and Montasino Brewing Co. in California.
JO: I had the privilege of holding one of your guitars at your show and I'm surprised how heavy it was. When you're on stage, towards the end of the set, you must get tired!
ZW: No, I lift weights. I'm into power lifting and working out. It's therapeutic for me. I dig it.
JO: Is there anything else you would like to add?
ZW: To all the Society, to all those motherf**kers out there, everybody in the band appreciates the support, man!
