By Mitch Lafon
Longtime Great White lead singer, Jack Russell, is testing the waters with his first ever North American solo effort, For You (his first internationally released solo record was the Japanese only Shelter Me CD of a few years back).
The album is a change from the typical blues-rock fair of Great White and leans closer to what can be found on any AC (adult-contemporary) radio format, but Jack makes no excuses to his rock fans, "this is where I'm at in my life right now. People say that writing about love is sappy, but that's what it's all about. That's what we're all here to figure out. This is the most cohesive collection of songs that I've ever put together. I love this record. Just like the last Great White album for me was my favourite. We were writing stuff for a new album, but none of it was toping that, so I figured we should go out on a high note. As for the new album, I could have a hit, but it depends on whether or not AC radio is going to accept me. It may be three albums down the line when they finally realize 'ok, he's not mister heavy metal and that he's actually a singer.' I don't wanna be pigeonholed as a rock singer. I'm just a songwriter-singer. Give me a song and I'll sing it. The most important thing is to write a record that I'm proud of because at the end of the day nobody has to live with it but me. Hopefully, I'll get a shot at radio. Just play it and let the people decide that's all I ask. There's nothing worst than having a record you love and not having a chance for people to hear it. If they hear it and say it sucks, then fine I can deal with that. Hopefully, the music will speak for itself."
