JOHN WAITE - Baby Grown Up! Page 3
by Martin Popoff

"I mean, you're not going to see me wearing a cowboy hat," continues John, "but I played the Opry last week, and it was one of the biggest moments of my life. When I walked out on that stage, I was absolutely... I almost couldn't breathe. That was very real to me. I walked out and Alison Krauss was already out there, and she introduced me and we played a couple of songs. And on the second night, Vince Gill came out and played with us. I had my band there around me, and it was just a huge moment. I don't know if being #1 was bigger than that for me. I'm just about people who can really play, and really write. And at some point, the statement of running around screaming is just like redundant. Maybe there's something of value in that when you're 20 or something. But I never did that either. There was always heart in the songs. And I see that, a lot, in the music I'm writing at the moment, and in the people I play with."

And it looks like the days of John showing up on some MTM or Frontiers or any other type of AOR project like bad English are over and done with...

"I get a lot of offers to do things like that, and I turn them all down. That's what's weird about this thing. I'm not arena rock and I've never been arena rock. And I look at that and I just scratch my head and walk away. I don't particularly have any positive reaction at all to that. I just don't like it. I don't like being pleased about coming from the past. I mean, today is beautiful, tomorrow is even better, let's go (laughs)."

"I've got to tour," says John in closing, asked about plans for '07. "I've got a lot of dates to play. A lot. And I'm hoping to get behind this and keep working. But I'm having a hard time keeping my hands off the guitar. And I think it's inevitable that I will be recording. I've got all these ideas going on, and because all of this stuff is behind me, it's like taking everything off your desk and throwing it into the bin and saying 'Today the sun came up at 5:30; what are we going to do with today?' Yeah!"
