From al:
quote
It's funny, just the other day a person at work mentioned that "all metal bands sound the same to me and it sounds like they are all playing the same old song".
Yeah, I used to hear that alot growing up. Basically comments like that seem to come from people who may hear bits and pieces of different songs which, of course if heard on that basis could sound the same. Sometimes I admit, 5 Malmsteen albums in a row may get to me after a while but, I think one really has to appreciate the genre to understand it (if that makes any bit of sese).

I also think it comes when the mainstream gets saturated with copycat bands which often take away from the originators of a particular sound. I know that happened many times in the 80's with the hair bands. Even today, there are tons of these grunge-rap-core bands that all sound the same. Since I'm not a huge fan of the grung-rap-core scene I couldn't even tell you what band(s) is the originator of that sound.

Hey, I wouldn't dis Strat players! Hendrix wasn't that bad, was he? Neither was Clapton in his early days.

I don't think I could answer this accurately. Since I've been listening to metal for so long I automaticly think most bands that have been around a while are unique. But at this point I don't know if it's because they actually are or if I've just heard them so long that I would know them anywhere if I heard them.

Example: voice aside I know within seconds the start of a Scorps song. Is it because I know it or they are just that unique in their music? I don't know really, and it may be that way with many bands I listen to.

Well, playing aside, I'm talking about just sounds here; Hendrix used a wider variety of tones than Malmsteen ever has, and all the imitation over time has eroded their distinctiveness. Still, yeah, I like a number of them.

As for Clapton, I've never cared for his "woman tone", nor have I ever understood why it's called that.

I can spot B.B. King's guitar playing quite easily.

"Woman tone"?! Ha-ha! Nice one! Never heard that before! Yeah, I agree, Clapton is a wussie.
